What To Know About CBD (cannabis sativa) for Skincare

Updated: Nov 12, 2023

CBD Oil is a key ingredient that turbo-boosted my skin to a smooth, supple, radiant, (mostly blemish-free) appearance. Hydrating and moisturizing are the keys to turning around sensitive, acne-prone skin. So what is CBD (cannabidiol) and how does it work to get you to good skin?

The Cannabis plant is harvested mainly for two ingredients: Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa. Let's start there. Here's the breakdown:

Cannabis Indica is the stout, broad-leaf non-hemp offspring “marijuana” plant of the Cannabis family containing 15-40% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Its crystalline structure causes that “high” but also has groundbreaking medicinal benefits.

Cannabis Sativa is the tall, narrow-leaf offspring of the Cannabis family. Hemp is derived from the plant’s leaves, flowers, and stalks containing less than 0.3% THC. It’s the beauty market's superstar ingredient because of its multi-beneficial cannabinoid CBD. It has a wide range of benefits, like anti-aging for skin, and it’s used to relieve symptoms of depression, stress, epilepsy, and menstrual cramps to name a few.

CBD has become a good skin superhero with super-restorative powers, making the biggest debut in the beauty world since essential oils. But this part will not get you high! CBD oil is my hero in achieving the skin of my wildest dreams. It's a powerful key ingredient to reverse sensitive skin issues.

CBD Oil soothes and quiets inflammation, and redness caused by acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. CBD face oil doesn’t contain the terpenes that give off that pungent "weed" scent, so no worries about it getting into your pores.

Benefits of Hemp Seed Oil for Skin

Hemp Seed Oil is a delivery oil with its own skin-nourishing benefits. Hemp Seed Oil is packed with nutrient-dense vitamins and proteins that restore and protect skin’s hydro-lipid barrier (made up of oil + water). The hydro-lipid barrier (acid mantle) has two functions: to retain moisture on skin’s surface and protect it from environmental stressors, like dirt and damaging UV rays.

As this barrier begins to deteriorate, it forms small holes where moisture escapes and harmful substances enter and cause skin to become dehydrated and irritated. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in Hemp Seed Oil are natural emollients to help seal thinning areas and restore moisture, preventing environmental damage. Hemp Seed Oil restores, prevents, and protects.

My Favorite Face Oil

All The Feels Facial Oil by e.l.f. is a Hemp Derived Face Oil formulated with cannabis sativa and rosehip oil - rich in antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids, and squalane. Squalane is another plant-derived skincare sweetheart (squalene is the natural form converted to squalane for formulation stability). Squalane moisturizes skin and helps improve elasticity - both super important for youthful, vibrant skin. I apply this oil at night as part of my nighttime skincare routine. In the morning, my skin is radiant, bouncy, and smooth. Using an effective skin oil is a MUST for improving dull, dry, saggy, reactive skin.
